Designing a monument for a loved one can seem like a daunting task at first due to there being a plethora of moving parts involved in creating the perfect piece to memorialize that person forever. This task is then complicated further by the fact that it can be extremely emotionally challenging, as well, to design a monument for someone you care for. For the past couple of months, we have outlined various options for designing a headstone or monument. This month is the last article in this monument series, where we will overview the different things you can add to the face of a headstone. Whether it be an epitaph, picture, or symbol, the decision of what to add to a monument is significant because it will endure for many years. Here are three things you can put on the face of your monument or headstone:
Epitaph
A short message, otherwise known as an epitaph, is usually added to a headstone alongside the person’s name, birth date, and death date. Usually, an epitaph aims to impart words of wisdom, convey the most significant values of the departed, or provide a summation of their life. At its core, the message written on a headstone represents a bond between the living and the dead. With the epitaph being one of the most important aspects of a headstone, it can be challenging to decide on the best option.
To help decide your epitaph, there are some key points to keep in mind when crafting the perfect message for your loved one’s memory. For starters, less is usually better when it comes to epitaphs. You are typically limited to a few lines, so you want to make it concise and to the point. Be sure to also think about the point of view from which the epitaph will be written. It can be written from the perspective of the deceased, a relative, or even a friend. Finally, would you prefer the epitaph to address an audience, or would you rather describe the life of the deceased? These are all important questions to answer when crafting the message. The epitaph should also reflect the person's life in a way that best suits them. Sometimes, people also choose epitaphs that convey final words of wisdom. There are many options to choose from, which is part of what makes an epitaph so challenging. Whatever you decide, it is essential to ensure it is timeless. Keep in mind that these words will be inscribed on the monument forever. You can also decide from some of these popular options:

Photo
In addition to an epitaph, some people choose to have a photo of their loved one engraved on the tombstone. Some people also choose this option instead of an epitaph on smaller-sized headstones. If you are considering a photo, it is important to consider how some stones work better than others to show the photo. Black granite, for example, is one of the most commonly used options because the contrast allows for better picture quality. Bronze is also a commonly used option for this type of etching because it is easily manipulated and customized. When selecting a photo for the headstone, it is essential to consider the technical aspects (what type of stone and etching style to use), as well as choosing the most appropriate picture. You should aim for a photo that best captures the essence of your loved one. Be sure to keep in mind, however, to choose one that is high quality with a neutral background. A great photo would be one where the person is smiling and has a happy memory attached to it.
Carvings or Symbols
Designing a gravestone involves more than just choosing the wording and quotes to include. Most headstones feature a small symbol or design carved into them that symbolizes the person being memorialized. A dove, cross, anchor, angels, and hearts are just a few symbols that are often represented on headstones. When selecting a symbol for a loved one's memorial, consider choosing something that had a special meaning to them. Whether it is something that they were passionate about, inspired them, or something they loved, this symbol will be a representation of that person for years to come. When selecting this symbol, also consider any other meanings attached. There is still an ongoing debate among scholars about the meanings of certain symbols, which may result in differing interpretations.
